Biography

Gary Grimes (born 1955) was an American film and television actor. He is know for his roles in movies Summer of '42 (1971), Gus (1976) and Class of '44 (1973).

Early life

Grimes was born on June 2, 1955 in San Francisco, California. He is a nephew of American actor Rudy Solari.

Career

Grimes acting career began in 1965, when he played the character of church choirboy in Andrew V. McLaglen directed film, Shenandoah. After this film, he appeared in a few television series including My Three Sons, The Brady Bunch, and Gunsmoke.

His first major film role came in 1971 film Summer of '42, in which he played the role of Hermie opposite Jennifer O'Neill's older, more sophisticated Dorothy. For the role, Grimes was nominated in 1972 for the Most Promising Newcomer Golden Globe Award, as well as the Male and a BAFTA Award as Best Newcomer. Grimes also starred in the sequel Class of '44 (1973), which followed his character to college.

In 1973, he appeared in John Wayne starrer Cahill U.S. Marshal, and in 1974, in Lee Marvin and Ron Howard starrer The Spikes Gang. In 1976, he appeared as Andy Petrovic in cult Disney film Gus.

Grimes largely retired from show business in the late 1970s (except for an episode of Matt Houston in 1983). In 1987, he lent his voice as one of the Beatles in Carlo Liconti directed Canadian film Concrete Angels.

He lives in Los Angeles and has remained out of public view since that time, working for a charitable organization.

In a 2011 interview with American Profile magazine, Grimes said:

I got to the point where the work wasn't up to the quality that I wanted…I’m very happy in my decision.
